MagicaVoxel: A 3D Pixel Art App That Still Works on Linux via Wine!
MagicaVoxel is one of those applications you can use to create voxel-based artwork think of it like pixel art, but in 3D. Creating objects in the app feels a lot like playing Minecraft, where you build structures block by block. Users can also apply effects to their voxel creations, such as smoke, metal, transparency, or a glass-like look.
This application has actually been released for quite some time. When I visited the official website, I noticed that it hadn’t received any recent updates. The latest available version was 0.99.7.1 (Beta), released in 2023 at the time this article was written.
What’s a bit disappointing, though, is that while older versions supported Linux, the latest release and recent ones in general no longer do.
Of course, it’s entirely up to the developer, because the creator is free to make the application for any platform. But I was curious, I tried this app running via Wine, and wow! it turns out that Magica Voxel runs pretty well on the PC I use.
Here’s a screenshot of MagicaVoxel running through the Heroic Games Launcher using Wine GE version 8-26-x86_64 and it ran smoothly.

MagicaVoxel Run On Linux |
I haven’t explored all the features yet, but I did try the rendering function and tested a few built-in materials and everything worked quite smoothly. In my personal opinion, even though MagicaVoxel no longer officially supports Linux, it still runs well through Wine. I was even able to export my work in .ply and .obj formats and import them into applications like Blender 3D.
